Electric scooter battery.

An electric scooter runs on a battery. This is the most expensive and important part of the device. Its quality will determine how long you can travel on a single charge and after how long you need to replace the battery.

Types of batteries for electric scooters.

The battery market for electric scooters is represented by two types of batteries: lead-acid and lithium. The first type of battery has a significant advantage - low cost. Among the shortcomings: heavy weight, low power, short period of possible operation, low environmental friendliness. It is impossible to throw them away, since lead is a heavy metal, the salts of which irrevocably harm the soil and groundwater. And not all countries have processing plants.

More ecological, durable and lighter is the lithium battery. Statistics show that most often these devices are purchased for electric scooters. There are such types of lithium batteries:

  • Li-Ion. These are the weakest batteries in terms of power, they do not withstand low temperatures well and their useful life rarely exceeds four years. But they are cheap;
  • Lithium polymer. They have a fairly high power (compared to other types of batteries), support fast charging and are relatively inexpensive;
  • Lithium-manganese. Their power is lower than that of polymer batteries, they do not support fast charging. They serve up to 5 years and are suitable for medium power devices;
  • Lithium phosphate. Great power, fast charging capability, stable operation in cold season and durability (up to 10 years) make them most attractive to buyers. It is these batteries that Xiaomi installs in its best scooter models directly from the factory.

Most of the time, buyers opt for lithium ion and lithium phosphate batteries.

Comparison of Li-Ion and LiFePO4.

To make your final choice, take a look at the key features of both device groups.

Lithium ions.

The voltage of this battery is 3.6-3.75 V, and the lower threshold reaches 2.5-3.0 V. The optimum temperature for the battery is + 15 … + 25 degrees. The battery can withstand about 1000 full discharge cycles. You can store such a battery without consequences for its future operation for about 5 years. Overcharging is quite dangerous for lithium-ion batteries, therefore operation without a protective plate is prohibited. Li-Ion has low voltage stability, it is dangerous in case of damage (ignites).

LiFePO4.

The usual voltage of a lithium phosphate battery is 3.0-3.3 V, and the minimum is 2.0 V. The optimum temperature is quite wide, from -30 to +50 degrees (due to to this, it can be used both in winter and in summer). The battery allows you to do about 5 thousand cycles from 0 to 100% charge. With careful operation (without discharge to zero), it can do up to 10 thousand cycles. The battery can be stored up to 10 years. Works with or without kick plate. When it is damaged, it does not light up, only smoke comes out. It has high voltage stability. The mass and dimensions of the LiFePO4 battery are smaller than those of the lithium ion battery.

Tips to extend the "life" of the battery.

In order to make the battery last longer, do not allow it to discharge below 15%, turn it off within one day after the battery is fully charged. Avoid use in sub-zero temperatures, even LiFePO4 batteries deteriorate from this. Dry the device thoroughly after exposure to rain. If the battery is dead, please try to charge it as soon as possible. At low load percentages, start with the foot, not the motor.
